Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. There are also fentanyl analogs, such as acetyl fentanyl, furanylfentanyl, and alfentanil, which are like fentanyl in chemical structure. Fentanyl and its analogs are a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States.
To better put this in perspective, in 2020, more than 56,000 deaths involving synthetic opioids (other than methadone) occurred in the United States, which is more deaths than from any other type of opioid. Synthetic opioid-involved death rates increased by over 56% from 2019 to 2020 and accounted for over 82% of all opioid-involved deaths in 2020. The Colorado law enforcement has already seized more fentanyl in 2022 than all of 2021.
